I live near and volunteer at Long Branch Nature Center in Arlington, Virginia. I spend what sometimes seems like too much of my free time working on controlling ("whacking") non-native, invasive plants. This is a quasi photo diary of what I see, including some of the native plants and critters, too. Also I toss in an occasional, verbose rant, and off-topic other stuff from my trips.
Whacking invasives - a metaphor, something to do, exercise, cheap entertainment, channeled aggression.
I'm worried about the patches of Italian Arum (Arum italicum) that I'm finding in the park. Next to this one is good ole English Ivy, of course. I know it's a bad actor. The Arum is pretty but I don't want it to invade natural areas like it seems to be doing. Update - Italian Arum has been reported as invasive in nearby Rock Creek National Park. So I guess it's time for some more whacking...
